I have been hearing what a deal Unos Tacos is for a while now, maybe 6 months or so. How they had opened a location in Mesa, so it was not just their location in Phoenix. Also I had put it off, for a bit. We went on a Saturday night.
Queso Birria Taco Review:
Appearance = 1.8 / 2 – Looked fantastic & crispy looking
Tortilla = 1.7 / 2 – It was crispy, good texture and what I want from a Birria taco.
Meat / filling = 1.6 / 2 – The meat was not as flavorful as other Birrias.
Sauce = 1.7 / 2 – Consome added the flavor that made it good. Not as good without the Consome.
Value = 1.6 / 2 $3.75 + $1.75 Consome= $5.50 – Paying extra for the Consome adds up. Don’t skimp out here, it makes a huge difference with the consome.
Total Score 8.4 / 10 - The Consome ties the whole taco together. I liked it a lot. It is very close to Carne Asada Grill’s Birria taco. Not sure which one I would pick between the 2.
Vampiro Asada Review:
Appearance = 1.8 / 2 – Just beautiful
Tortilla = 1.9 / 2 – Its what you dream of.
Meat / filling = 1.9 / 2 – The asada is top notch.
Sauce = 1.8 / 2 – Guacamole is wow, wow. Not that green type of paste lots of taco places put on your rolled tacos or something to mask the unpleasant taste. The taco sauce is good, red super hot, but good flavor. Maybe 3 seconds after a bit with the red the heat kicks in. The green was not very spicy with good flavor.
Value = 1.8 / 2 $3.95 – Average price with above average taste and serving size.
Total Score 9.2 / 10 The Vampiro was my favorite on this visit. It is like a tostada. After having the asada in this, I regretted not getting Asada in other items.
Birria Caramelo Review:
Appearance = 1.1 / 2 – Looked ok, and a little dry or too crispy
Tortilla = 0.5 / 2 – Flour tortilla ok, maybe I just got so spoiled by how good their corn tortillas are. Just dry and crispy in the wrong ways.
Meat / filling = 1.1 / 2 – Meat was dry, I even dipped a bite in the Consome.
Sauce = 1.7 / 2 – Consome & Salsa could not fix this one.
Value = 0.5 / 2 $4.95 –
Total Score 4.9 / 10 - I would pass on getting this one. I do wonder if I got Asada and the Guacamole if it would have changed it all in a good way.
Chicken Taco Review:
Appearance = 1.0 / 2 – Chicken looked dry
Tortilla = 1.8 / 2 – The corn tortilla is fabulous. Every few minutes you will see one of the cooks pressing them out as they make them constantly all day. So good.
Meat / filling = 0.5 / 2 – The chicken was so dry. I added a bunch of green salsa to it, still dry as heck.
Sauce = 1.7 / 2 – The taco sauce is good, red super hot, but good flavor. The green was not very spicy with good flavor. Still did not fix this taco
Value = 0.5 / 2 $2.75 – To much for dry meat.
Total Score 5.5 / 10 - This one is a pass for me too. Chicken was not my first choice. They were out of El Pastor. Everyone is out of Pastor right now. I wasted 2 of my precious bites on this one, instead of having more the Vampiro.
Taco sauces were not labeled. But hey, did not seem to stop the hundreds of people I saw coming in and out. I prefer sauces be labeled so if it says hot, I don’t just dump it on a bite. I will proceed with caution. No one else seems to care about that.
